Colorado Ski Resorts Top List

 

Ski holidays in Colorado means family vacations and one of the biggest family events of the year. There are kid friendly ski resorts which lessons for all ages. Kinderhut at Breckenridge offers ski lessons starting at 2 ½ years and a day care for infants and toddlers. There are activities and terrain for each member of the family to enjoy.

The main resorts best suited for family ski vacations are Aspen, Vail, Breckenridge, Keystone, Beaver Creek, Copper Mountain, Crested Butte, Steamboat, and Telluride. These resorts will offer other activities like cross country skiing, sleigh rides, snowmobiling and snowshoeing.

Book your reservations at least 6 months in advance for Christmas holidays and 4 months in advance for January to April. Get up-to-date information for your next visit to Colorado ski country.

Arapahoe Basin is a few miles East of Keystone, the mountain has a summit elevation of 13,050 feet. Since 1946 the Arapahoe Basin provides some of the highest skiing elevations in Colorado. Arapahoe Basin opens early in the season and closes late, sometimes as late as July 4. Most of the Runs are above tree line. The closest lodging accommodations are in Keystone.

Aspen Highlands, 3 miles from downtown Aspen, provides breathtaking views of the Maroon Bells. The summit elevation is 12,500 ft and a vertical of 1,700 ft.

Aspen Mountain starts in the heart of downtown Aspen. Also known as Ajax, it is exhilarating for skiers and snowboarders alike.

Beaver Creek Resort is located a few miles West of Vail and next to Avon, Colorado. The summit elevation is 11,440 ft with a vertical rise of 4,040 ft. The heart of the resort, Beaver Creek Village has many shops, art galleries, bars and restaurants, all conveniently linked by heated walkways and escalators.

Buttermilk, 3 miles from downtown Aspen, 6 miles from Snowmass, is home of the ESPN Winter X Games through2010. The summit has an elevation of 9,000 ft. Buttermilk welcomes all skiing levels, including beginners.

Breckenridge Ski Resort has a summit elevation of 12,998 ft with a vertical of3,398 ft. The town of Breckenridge has the largest historic district in Colorado and features a wide variety of shops, activities, culture and attractions to entertain. Breckenridge is one of the best family ski areas in Colorado

Copper Mountain has a summit of 12,313 ft with a vertical 2,601 ft. Copper Mountain is located East of Vail pass just off of I70.

Crested Butte is located in southwest Colorado. The resort lies is at Mt. Crested Butte, three miles from the town of Crested Butte, originally settled in the 1880s as a mining supply camp. Crested Butte Resort has a summit elevation of 12,162 ft and a vertical of 2,775 ft. Crested Butte is off the beaten path but a great place to avoid the crowds.

Durango Mountain Resort is located in Southwest Colorado and provides great family entertainment. This is a good place for skiing and tubing for all ages.

Eldora is located just West of Boulder, Colorado and the closest ski area to Denver. Eldora is a smaller ski area but it’s proximity to Denver makes it a local favorite.

Keystone has three magnificent mountain playgrounds—Dercum Mountain, North Peak, and The Outback. There’s something for every skier of any level at each mountain. There are more than 3,000 vertical ft and with the highest elevation of 11,980 ft. Keystone is one of the few ski resorts that offers night time skiing.

Loveland Ski Area is a local favorite with a summit elevation of 13,010 ft and a vertical of 2,410 ft. Loveland Ski Area is located on the continental divide and has no accommodations.

Snowmass, 9 miles from downtown Aspen, is a massive ski area and demands repeat trips. Snowmass has a vertical drop of 4,406 ft with a summit elevation of 12,510 ft.

Steamboat is in northwest Colorado and 160 miles northwest of Denver. Steamboat has a summit elevation of 10,568 ft and a vertical of 3,668 ft. The Steamboat Ski Area is located a few miles from the town of Steamboat. Steamboat is a small town where western heritage and genuine friendliness are honored and where not a whole lot has changed in the last hundred years.

Telluride has a colorful history as an 1800’s mining town. The Telluride Ski area offers a genuine mountain experience for all levels of skiers. Beginners and intermediate skiers can ride to the highest peaks and enjoy terrain and views typically reserved for the experts. The summit elevation is 12,255 ft with a vertical of 3,530 ft.

Vail has three distinct areas of the mountain including four terrain parks, seven bowls and5,289 acres of terrain. Vail is the largest ski resort in the U.S. and offers great dinning, kids activities, and nightlife.

Winter Park has an elevation of 12,060 ft and a vertical of 2610 on Mary Jane. Winter Park is located West of Denver on Hwy 40. There is also snow tubing available in near by Fraser with a groomed, lighted hillside.
